Doctrine of the Mean · Two public excerpts《

The Mean is a judgment
made in time.

Originally part of the Book of Rites, this later Four Books text treats balance as timely judgment and learning as something completed by action.

A thoughtful person finds the fitting center for the moment.

The text contrasts the exemplary person's timely balance with acting without restraint. The center is not a mechanical compromise between two extremes; what fits must be judged in the situation at hand.

Study widely, ask closely, think carefully, distinguish clearly, and put it firmly into practice.

The five verbs form a learning cycle rather than a checklist to display. The following lines insist on returning to what one cannot yet do or understand, so knowledge ends in sustained action rather than verbal fluency.
