《呂氏春秋》成於戰國末年，並非呂不韋一人所著。這兩則選讀從因時變法與自我省察，理解其兼收並蓄的思想。
戦国末期に呂不韋のもとで編まれた文集です。古い決まりをいつ改めるか、他人を判断する前に何を見つめるかを考えます。
《呂氏春秋·察今》
世易時移變法宜矣
As the world and its times change, changing the rules becomes fitting.
世事與時勢都改變了，調整法度才合宜。
世の中も時勢も変わった。制度を改めるのがふさわしい。
The chapter argues that earlier laws addressed earlier conditions. It compares a law left unchanged after circumstances shift to a medicine kept the same when an illness has changed.
《察今》主張先王之法有其形成時的條件；病情變了仍用舊藥，便可能誤事。原文要求辨明方法所回應的現實，而非為變而變。
『察今』は古い法をただまねるのではなく、それが応えた条件を見直すよう説きます。病が変われば薬も変えるという比喩が続きます。
《呂氏春秋·先己》
欲知人者必先自知
To understand others, first know yourself.
想了解別人，必先了解自己。
人を知ろうとするなら、まず自分を知るべきだ。
The line follows two parallel calls to overcome and examine oneself before doing so to others. In this political context, self-scrutiny is preparation for sound judgment and leadership, not withdrawal from public life.
前文還說欲勝人須先自勝、欲論人須先自論。這段把自省放在評判與治理之前，並非要人只顧內心而遠離公共事務。
『先己』は人に勝つ前に自分に勝ち、人を論じる前に自分を省みよと述べます。自省は社会から退くためでなく、よりよく判断するためです。
