The highest goodness is like water. Water benefits all things and does not contend.
Water is not merely gentle; it is adaptive, persistent, and useful without demanding recognition. Its humility is a form of effectiveness.
To understand others is intelligence; to understand yourself is clarity. To overcome others takes force; to overcome yourself is strength. To know contentment is wealth; to persevere is resolve.
The chapter distinguishes outward capacity from inward mastery. Self-knowledge and contentment change not only what we can do, but what is enough and worth doing.
In pursuing learning, something is added each day; in pursuing the Way, something is released each day—released again, until action is no longer forced.
“Non-action” does not mean doing nothing. It questions unnecessary interference and the habit of treating every difficulty as something to control.
A tree wide enough to embrace grows from a tiny shoot; a nine-storey terrace rises from gathered earth; a thousand-mile journey begins beneath one’s feet.
Great outcomes are hidden inside ordinary beginnings. The passage also warns that care near completion matters as much as energy at the start.
Nothing under heaven is softer and weaker than water, yet nothing surpasses it in overcoming the hard and strong.
Softness here is the ability to continue, enter, and reshape without meeting hardness on its own terms. Yielding can be a long form of strength.
